1980, Rimini. Ricetta di Donna. Il disco che ho fatto ad Ornella.
Avevo 23 anni.
Lei all'apice, stava al Grand Hotel.
Io da Milano con la mia Lancia Flavia 1800 a gas. Grigio topo - scuro. Tre posti davanti. Senza copri cerchioni, pagata 300.000 lire.
Stavo in una pensione a casa di Dio dove non avevano mai dato via la chiave del portone. Età media dei clienti: 80 anni.
Non sto scherzando. In sala da pranzo avevano un armadio enorme pieno di tutti i tipi di medicine.
Insomma penso: "meglio lavo la macchina". Ci tenevo a fare un po' bella figura. Arrivo nel parcheggio del Grand'Hotel e senza nemmeno rallentare faccio inversione a U.
C'erano solo Mercedes blu notte, forse anche delle Rolls.
Mi presentai a piedi. "Ciao", dice Ornella, attorniata da gente dinamica ed abbronzata, "come sei arrivato, in auto?" "No, no, in treno", dico io.
Stava con un tipo simpatico, brillante, uno che aveva un bel marchio di mutande da uomo che si chiamava Jhonny Lambs, in onore a Gianni Agnelli.
Non so nemmeno come le ho fatte quelle foto. La sera mi accodavo alle loro cene in ristoranti di cui fino ad allora non sospettavo nemmeno l'esistenza, si mangiava solo pesce e si vedeva lontano un miglio che il vino costava un botto.
Però nessuno pagava mai. Semplicemente uscivamo, mentre Ornella faceva un cenno con la mano, benevolo.
Qualche giorno fa, 33 anni dopo, siamo usciti insieme a cena. Io le ho scattato questo ritratto, e lei mi ha dedicato il disco.

I was 23 years old.
She was at her acme, and stayed at the Grand Hotel.
I came from Milan with my gas-motor 1800 Lancia Flavia. Dark ash-gray. Three seats in the front. No cover rims, paid 300.000 lire.
I was in a boarding house in the middle of nowhere where the key of the gate had never been given away. Average age of the customers: 80 years old.
I'm not kidding. In the dining room there was a huge closet full of all kinds of medicines.
Well, I thought: "I'd better wash my car". I wanted to make a good impression. I arrived at the parking lot of the Grand Hotel and did a U-turn without even slowing down. There were only dark blue Mercedes, perhaps even some Rolls.
I introduced myself as if I had come on foot. "Hello" says Ornella, surrounded by all cool and tanned people, "Did you get here by car?" "No no, by train", I said.
She was with a brilliant guy, who had a brand of men's underwear called Johnny Lambs, in honor of Gianni Agnelli.
I don't even know how I made those pictures. In the evening I followed them in their dinners in restaurants I didn't suspect even existed till then, we only ate fish and you could tell the wine cost a hell of a lot of money.
But nobody ever paid. We simply went out - shouting - while Ornella waved her hand, benevolent.
A few days ago, 33 years later, we had dinner together. I took this picture of her, and she signed her record for me.

Qui è usata come copertina per il libro di Deborah Ball, l'unico autorizzato dalla famiglia Versace sugli eventi legati alla morte di Gianni a Miami il 15 luglio del 1997.

This is one of the rare posed pictures of Gianni and Donatella together.
I took it in 1991 with my Rolleiflex and an Arri 1200 at Gianni's place, in Via del Gesù.
A photo that Corbis sells from years, every month.
Here it is used as a cover for the book by Deborah Ball, the only one authorized by the Versace family on the events related to Gianni's death in Miami on July 15, 1997.

"Photographing cities does not mean choosing the best architectures and isolate them from the environment to enhance their aesthetic and structural dimension, but to me it means exactly the opposite. That is to equate the "erudite" architecture and the "ordinary" one, to build a dialogue of coexistence, because the real city, the one I'm interested to narrate, contains this mixture between excellence and mediocrity, between center and suburbs..."
